EAGLE PASS, TX – A routine inspection at the Texas-Mexico border turned into a major drug bust this week, when U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized more than $2.1 million worth of cocaine hidden within a single cargo truck. The discovery underscores the daily challenges faced by border agents in combatting sophisticated smuggling operations.

Routine Inspection Leads to Stunning Cocaine Discovery

On Wednesday, CBP officers stationed at the Camino Real International Bridge in Eagle Pass flagged a tractor-trailer in the import lot for secondary inspection.

The vehicle, which initially seemed unremarkable, was sent to a more thorough examination area where officers uncovered 60 packages filled with what appeared to be cocaine. The total weight of the haul was 162 pounds, with an estimated street value of $2,167,372.

CBP Officers’ Training and Technology Put to the Test

Port Director Pete Beattie of the Eagle Pass Port of Entry highlighted the dedication and expertise of his officers in a statement: “This large cocaine seizure in the cargo environment reflects the reality of the drug threat our frontline officers face every day. Our frontline officers utilize all their training, high tech tools, and resources as they conduct their examinations, and this seizure exemplifies our continued dedication to CBP’s border security mission.”

After securing the cocaine and the tractor-trailer, CBP handed over the case to special agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), who have launched a criminal investigation to trace the origins of the shipment and identify those responsible for the attempted smuggling.

The CBP officers at Eagle Pass remain vigilant in their efforts to intercept illegal substances and dismantle the networks that threaten border security. For those working tirelessly along the border, each successful seizure is a small victory in a larger, ongoing battle.
