ST. PAUL, MN – Online dating has become a minefield of deception, and many singles in Minnesota are falling victim to scams they never saw coming. A new survey reveals that more people are being tricked by scammers using artificial intelligence to enhance their profiles and messages, making it harder than ever to distinguish real romance from a well-crafted con. We sat down with celebrity matchmaker Susan Trombetti, known for pairing some of Hollywoodâs most elite, who warned us that spotting fraudsters has become just as important as finding true love.
The Investigator Behind the Love Connections
Trombetti, CEO of Exclusive Matchmaking, has built a reputation for bringing high-profile couples together. But beyond matchmaking, sheâs also a sharp-eyed relationship investigator.
She isnât just focused on who her clients should dateâsheâs equally concerned with who they should avoid.
“Online dating apps are the biggest venue for financial fraud,” Trombetti cautioned.
“Anyone can pass a background check with a fake name but I can tell you who they really are and what they want.”
The Rise of AI-Assisted Romance Scams
According to a recent study by Norton, 55% of online daters reported encountering suspicious profiles weekly, while 40% admitted to being directly targeted by scams.
The rise of artificial intelligence has only made deception easierâ60% of current online daters suspect theyâve chatted with someone whose messages were generated by AI.
Despite these concerns, when put to the test, less than half (46%) of respondents could correctly identify an AI-generated profile image.
This growing challenge makes it increasingly difficult for singles to navigate the digital dating world safely.
The Most Common Dating Scamsâand How to Spot Them
The study found that online daters are most frequently targeted by:
- Catfishing (55%) â Scammers pose as someone theyâre not, using fake identities to lure victims.
- Romance scams (34%) â Fraudsters manipulate victims emotionally to gain financial benefits.
- Sugar daddy/sugar baby scams (32%) â Scammers trick people into financial arrangements that turn exploitative.
- Sextortion scams (31%) â Criminals blackmail victims using intimate messages or images.
“Many men and women are so focused on finding ‘THE ONE’ that they have blinders on to certain traits in a potential date or relationship they should run from,” Trombetti explained.
How to Stay Safe While Dating Online
Trombetti has made it her mission to help clients not just find love, but avoid heartbreak. She teaches people how to identify warning signs, from spotting cheaters early to recognizing patterns that lead to bad relationships. Beyond compatibility, she believes dating success requires the ability to detect fraudsters before they strike.
Her expert advice includes recognizing the early warning signs of a scammer, verifying suspicious profiles, and taking action before falling victim.
“People need to know the red flags to avoid being conned,” she emphasized.
With romance scammers becoming more sophisticated, Trombettiâs investigative skills may be just as crucial as her matchmaking expertise. For Minnesotans looking for love in the digital world, the key to success isnât just attractionâitâs awareness.
