RICHMOND, VA – A Virginia teen was tragically shot and killed while trying to stop a fight during a late-night bonfire party in the woods. Christian Archen Whalen, 19, had gone to the gathering in Spotsylvania County, despite his girlfriend warning him not to go.

Teen Fatally Shot While Trying to Stop Party Fight

The incident unfolded just after midnight on Sunday, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office. Whalen was struck by a bullet while attempting to intervene in a fight between other partygoers. The authorities arrived at the scene around 1 a.m., where they found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.

In a desperate attempt to save his life, deputies rushed Whalen to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, the young man succumbed to his injuries.

Kenneth Watson, 18, has been charged with the killing. He now faces charges of homicide and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Watson is being held without bond at Rappahannock Regional Jail as detectives continue to investigate the shooting.

The heartache doesn’t end there.

Heartbroken Girlfriend Learns of Boyfriend’s Death in Shocking Text

Whalen’s girlfriend, Lacy Milling, 16, learned of her boyfriend’s death in the most devastating way—through a two-word text message from his father. “Christian died,” read the chilling notification, according to Milling, who had been anxiously awaiting news after Whalen stopped responding to her texts.

Earlier in the evening, Milling said she pleaded with Whalen not to attend the party. Her worst fears were realized when she saw social media posts asking for prayers for him. Her world shattered when the confirmation came from his father’s message.

Milling described Whalen as the “kindest person,” noting how he would help anyone—even if they were his enemy. The couple had been together for over a year, and Milling had hoped to build a future with Whalen. Now, those dreams have been crushed.

As the investigation continues, Whalen’s family and friends are left to mourn a life cut tragically short by senseless violence.
