ST. PAUL, MN – Hosting a Trunk-or-Treat event at your church is a fantastic way to engage with the community, offer a safe place for kids to trick-or-treat, and bring families together. It’s also just a whole lot of fun! Jack and I usually help volunteer at our church’s Trunk-or-Treat event, and every year, it’s a blast seeing the creative trunk setups and the joy on the kids’ faces. If you’re thinking about hosting one at your church, here’s how to make it a success from start to finish.
Step 1: Gather a Planning Team
Before you do anything else, assemble a small group of volunteers to help plan and execute the event. Organizing a Trunk-or-Treat can be simple, but you’ll need a few dedicated people to manage different aspects.
Some roles you’ll want to assign include:
- Event Coordinator – the person overseeing the event.
- Decorations – a team to help with themes, trunk decor ideas, and setup.
- Parking Management – someone to ensure the parking lot is organized and safe.
- Candy Distribution – volunteers to monitor candy stations and help with restocking.
Having a team helps divide the workload and makes the event run smoothly.

Step 2: Pick a Date and Location
Select a date that’s close to Halloween but doesn’t conflict with other local events. Weekends are often best to maximize attendance. The event is usually held in the church parking lot, but make sure there’s plenty of space for trunks and safe areas for children to walk around.
If your parking lot is smaller, consider collaborating with a local business or another church to share a larger space. Also, double-check if any permits are required for the event, depending on the size of your gathering.

Step 3: Create a Theme and Guidelines
Choosing a theme adds a layer of fun and creativity to your Trunk-or-Treat. You could go with something seasonal like fall or harvest, or keep it biblical with characters like Noah’s Ark or David and Goliath. Make sure the theme is family-friendly, and set clear guidelines for costumes and decor.
Here are a few suggestions to keep it simple:
- No scary costumes or decorations – think lighthearted and fun.
- No homemade treats – store-bought candy is always safer.
- Clear guidelines on trunk decorations – make it a fun competition to encourage participation.

Step 4: Promote the Event
Once your date, location, and theme are set, it’s time to get the word out! Use your church’s social media pages, website, and announcements to invite families. Create flyers for local businesses and schools, and don’t forget to put out a big sign near your church entrance.
Make it clear that this event is open to everyone in the community, whether or not they attend your church. It’s a great way to reach new people and show them what your congregation is all about.
Step 5: Decorate Your Trunks
This is where the real fun begins! Encourage participants to get creative with their trunk setups, matching the theme and making it as interactive as possible. A few examples we’ve seen over the years include:
- Noah’s Ark – complete with stuffed animals.
- Candy Land – a colorful and sweet setup.
- Harvest Barn – with hay bales and pumpkins.
To add a little competitive spirit, offer a prize for the best-decorated trunk. It can be as simple as a gift card or a “Trunk Decorating Champion” certificate. Trust me, people get into it when there’s a prize on the line!

Step 6: Plan for Safety and Security
Safety should be a top priority. Create a clear traffic flow for cars and people. You’ll want well-lit walkways and plenty of adult supervision. It’s a good idea to have a designated team for security and first aid in case of any minor mishaps.
Consider having one entrance and exit to monitor who comes and goes. This helps keep the area secure and gives parents peace of mind.
Step 7: Provide Extra Fun Activities
While the main event is trunk-or-treating, having a few extra activities makes the experience even more memorable. Consider adding:
- A bounce house or inflatable games.
- A small fall festival with a cakewalk or ring toss.
- A station where kids can make simple crafts, like decorating mini pumpkins.
You can also set up a table with cider, popcorn, or other simple refreshments to keep families warm and happy during the evening.

Step 8: Make It a Meaningful Outreach
Trunk-or-Treat is about more than just candy. It’s a great opportunity to connect with families who may not regularly attend church. You can set up a prayer booth, hand out small gifts like Bibles or scripture cards, or simply have friendly volunteers chatting with attendees about upcoming church events.
It’s a non-threatening way for people to experience the warmth of your congregation and get to know what your church has to offer.
A Fun and Faith-Filled Event
A successful Trunk-or-Treat takes some planning, but it’s worth every bit of effort. We’ve seen firsthand how it can bring people together in a fun and faith-filled environment. Last year, our church’s event was so well-received that we’re making it an annual tradition!
If you follow these steps, your Trunk-or-Treat will not only be a memorable night for the kids but also a meaningful way to reach out to your community and share God’s love. Have any helpful tips or ideas you’d like to share? Leave a comment below – we’d love to hear from you!
