Wausau, Wisconsin – Get ready for a cicada sensation! These little critters are making a big comeback this spring in the United States, and Wisconsin is set to be hit the hardest here in the Midwest.
Wisconsin, along with its neighboring states like Illinois, is about to witness a cicada invasion like no other. These aren’t your everyday cicadas; they’re periodical cicadas, and they’ve been hiding underground for quite a while.
PJ Liesch, the insect specialist hailing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, elaborates that these unique cicadas emerge from their underground hideout once every 17 years, and their previous appearance in Wisconsin dates back to 2007.
Now, how many of these little guys you’ll see depends on where you are in Wisconsin. They’re going to be partying it up in the far southern parts of the state.
You might wonder what makes these cicadas special. Well, unlike the regular summer cicadas you see, the periodical ones are dressed in black and orange, not green and black.
But, here’s the scoop: It’s still a mystery whether these cicadas are affected by climate change, given that they chill underground for so long.
Don’t expect the cicada concert to start until mid-to-late May or early June. They might be noisy, but they’re harmless little creatures on a mission to find love.
