Minneapolis, MN – As the fifth of May rolls around, folks across the Midwest are gearing up to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with some seriously delicious food and drinks. Picture this: the mouthwatering aroma of sizzling fajitas, the tangy kick of fresh salsa, and the refreshing clink of ice-cold margaritas. It’s like a little slice of Mexico right in your own backyard! But hold up, what exactly is Cinco de Mayo all about? Well, let me tell you a story…

🇲🇽 The Battle That Started It All

Let’s take a trip back to 1862, when Mexico was in a bit of a financial pickle. They had to put a pause on paying back some debts to European countries, which didn’t sit well with France. The French decided to use this as an excuse to try and establish an empire in Mexican territory.

The French army, led by General Charles Latrille de Lorencez, set their sights on the small town of Puebla de Los Angeles. They had a massive force of 6,000 well-armed troops, ready to crush the Mexican resistance. But the Mexicans, led by the brave General Ignacio Zaragoza, weren’t about to go down without a fight.

On the morning of May 5, 1862, the battle began. The French launched their assault, confident that they would make quick work of the outnumbered Mexicans. But Zaragoza and his men held their ground, fighting tooth and nail to defend their homeland. The battle raged on from sunrise to sunset, and when the dust settled, the French had lost nearly 500 soldiers, while the Mexicans suffered fewer than 100 casualties.

🎖️ A Symbolic Victory

The Battle of Puebla wasn’t a major strategic win in the grand scheme of the war against the French, but it was a huge morale booster for the Mexican people. It showed that they could stand up to a powerful European army and come out on top. The victory also bought some valuable time for President Benito Juárez to gather more resources and support.

Fast forward to 1867, and with a little help from the United States, Mexico finally gave the French the boot. The Austrian Archduke Maximilian, who had been installed as the emperor of Mexico by Napoleon III, was captured and executed. Puebla de Los Angeles was renamed in honor of General Zaragoza, the hero of the Battle of Puebla.
