NEW HAVEN, CT – One suspect has been arrested after a bomb scare forced the evacuation of multiple buildings, including City Hall, in New Haven, Conn., Friday morning, officials said.
The New Haven Police Department received a report of suspicious activity outside City Hall on Orange Street shortly before 7:30 a.m. Friday after a city employee saw an unknown person toss three canisters toward buildings then leave the area.
“As you can imagine with that kind of activity we wanted to make sure we were very cautious because of the potential of it being an explosive device,” New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said during a press conference Friday.
Streets in the area were shut down and evacuations were ordered while the police department’s bomb squad and the New Haven Fire Department responded to the scene.
Elicker said police used robots to X-ray the canisters, but Fire Chief John Alston Jr. said the bomb squad could not determine via X-ray the chemical makeup of the contents of the canister.
“So it’s hard to tell what propagation or devastation could happen with exploding them,” Alston said.
“We don’t know that they were explosive at all,” Elicker said. “It could have been somebody that was just exhibiting odd behavior”
Elicker said police had planned to conduct controlled detonations on each of them in an isolated area, but after the first detonation “went smoothly,” authorities determined the canisters were empty.
“Police do have a suspect in custody and that person has been arrested,” Elicker said. Police had not yet released any information on the suspect’s identity or motive Friday afternoon.
