The alligator, far from its native southeastern habitat, was rescued from Minisceongo Creek in Garnerville and is now thriving in its new home.
Reptile Discovery in a Cold New York Creek
The Haverstraw Police Department responded to a report last Thursday about a strange sighting in Minisceongo Creek, located near Bridge Street in Garnerville. Officers found a juvenile alligator—estimated to be around three feet long—struggling in the cold water.
Although alligators are typically found in warm regions of the southeastern United States, this particular reptile had somehow ended up in the frigid waters of New York. Police have not confirmed how the alligator came to be there, but social media users speculated that it might have been a pet abandoned once it became too large to handle.
Rescue and Recovery Efforts
Following the alligator’s retrieval, the Hudson Valley Humane Society took custody of the animal, ensuring it was warmed up after being exposed to the cold creek. The organization shared updates with the public, explaining the steps taken to stabilize the reptile and prepare it for transfer to a safe facility.
By Friday, the alligator had been relocated to Reptile Encounters in Saugerties. The facility, owned by Marc Perpetua, specializes in caring for reptiles and educating the public about these fascinating creatures.
A Happy Ending for the Wayward Alligator
The Hudson Valley Humane Society expressed their gratitude for the collaborative effort to ensure the alligator’s safety.
“Marc is fully licensed in New York State to possess these animals and his knowledge and depth of interest about them is incredible,” the organization said in a statement. “Marc is today’s hero and we are so very grateful that he is able to care for our alligator friend. We do love happy endings here at the Hudson Valley Humane Society.”
