AUBURNDALE, FL – A Florida teenager is facing first-degree murder charges after the fatal stabbing of his mother, just a year after being accused of killing his father.
In Auburndale, Florida, emergency responders arrived at a home on Hewlett Drive on September 8 following a distress call. Seventeen-year-old Collin Griffith had dialed 911, claiming that his mother, Catherine Griffith, 39, had been accidentally stabbed during a physical altercation. According to Collin, she lunged at him with a knife and accidentally fell onto it.
However, when officers from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrived, they found the scene did not align with the story Collin had provided.
“He became immediately uncooperative, and asked to speak with a lawyer,” the sheriff’s office said.
Investigation Reveals Troubling Inconsistencies
Upon further investigation, detectives noticed discrepancies between Collin’s account and the physical evidence. An autopsy later confirmed that Catherine Griffith’s neck wound was not consistent with an accidental stabbing.
Additionally, witnesses in the area reported hearing a heated argument between Collin and his mother earlier that day. They allegedly saw Collin “grab his mother by the hair and drag her inside the home” while she repeatedly pleaded, “let me go.”

Family members also disclosed past incidents of domestic violence. Collin’s grandmother told investigators that he had been arrested in February 2023 for allegedly shooting his father in Oklahoma, though those charges were ultimately dismissed.
Additionally, in November 2023, Collin was charged with domestic battery against his mother in Charlotte County.
Charges and Response from Authorities
Following these findings, Collin Griffith now faces charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and violating a no-contact order. Sheriff Grady Judd described the teen as a “violent predator” and pledged to ensure justice would be served.
“We will hold him accountable in Polk County, Sheriff Judd said. Adding, “we will do everything we can to keep him separated from civil society.”
This tragic event marks the second time in just over a year that Collin Griffith has been accused of killing a parent. The case is ongoing as authorities continue their investigation.
