BOULDER, CO – In a troubling case, a Colorado dentist has been arrested and charged with attempted enticement of a minor following an investigation into alleged plans for a sexual encounter with a mother and her young daughter.
According to federal prosecutors, 50-year-old Dr. Jason James Atha is accused of traveling nearly 2,000 miles from Colorado to West Palm Beach, Florida, with the intention of engaging in sexual acts with the mother and her 9-year-old child.
The investigation revealed that Atha had been communicating with an undercover agent posing as the mother on an online chatroom since October of last year.
In the online exchanges, authorities allege that Atha requested the mother dress the child in clothing and have her wear makeup that was inappropriate for the child’s age for the planned encounter.
He allegedly expressed a desire to be included in the mother’s plans to provide sex toys to her elementary-age daughter during playtime.
Authorities report that Atha was arrested upon arrival at the airport in West Palm Beach. He was found to be in possession of child pornography and sex paraphernalia at the time of his apprehension.
Atha, who works at Alpine Dentistry in Boulder, Colorado, has been charged with attempted enticement of a minor, a federal offense that carries a potential life sentence if convicted.
