DENVER, CO – A Colorado man, Clemente Flores-Hernandez, 45, has been sentenced to a total of 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault, the Denver District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday. The plea deal led to the dismissal of several additional charges against him, including first-degree murder and kidnapping.
Deadly Shooting Shatters Family
The violent incident took place on February 24, 2023, shortly after 8 p.m., at a home on Durham Court.
Flores-Hernandez fired four close-range shots into Karol Bedoya, 44, as she sat on a living room couch beside her 2-year-old grandson. Bedoya, a mother of four who described herself as a devoted “soccer mom,” died at the scene.
She and Flores-Hernandez had been in a romantic relationship for a decade prior to the shooting.
Denver Police Department officers arrived to find that Flores-Hernandez had taken the 2-year-old and fled. Meanwhile, Bedoya’s adult son, the father of the toddler, had been downstairs in the basement when the gunfire erupted. He rushed upstairs and encountered Flores-Hernandez, still armed with the murder weapon.
Multiple shots were fired at the son but missed him narrowly. A struggle ensued, during which Flores-Hernandez strangled the son before escaping with the child.
High-Speed Chase Ends in Arrest
The adult son pursued Flores-Hernandez, providing critical information that aided law enforcement in tracking the suspect.
A high-speed chase unfolded along Interstate 70, stretching approximately 30 miles east of Denver to Strasburg. Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Colorado State Patrol troopers deployed Stop Sticks to halt Flores-Hernandez’s vehicle.
He was apprehended near Strasburg, and the 2-year-old was recovered, fortunately unharmed physically.
Family Mourns a Devoted Mother
Bedoya’s family expressed profound grief over her loss. Her brother-in-law told reporters that subtle warning signs had emerged just a week earlier, when Bedoya tearfully confided to her family that she was unhappy and wanted Flores-Hernandez out of her life.
Her adult son, overcome with emotion, said that his mother had dedicated her life to supporting him and his brothers.
The family emphasized Bedoya’s commitment to her children’s success. A GoFundMe page remains active to collect donations for their future needs. Learn more here.
Sentencing and Dropped Charges
Flores-Hernandez received 48 years for the murder charge and 12 years for the assault charge, with the judge ordering the sentences to run consecutively, totaling 60 years.
In exchange for his guilty plea, charges such as first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault by strangulation, kidnapping, vehicular eluding, and child abuse were dropped.
Denver District Attorney John Walsh called Bedoya’s death a stark example of the devastating impact of domestic violence. He noted that the resolution of the case through the guilty plea and sentencing might offer some solace to Bedoya’s loved ones as they continue to grieve.
A Moment for Reflection

Karol Bedoya’s vibrant life as a dedicated mother of four and her tragic loss resonate deeply with her family, friends, and the 2-year-old grandson who witnessed that fateful night. The Denver community stands together in mourning, grappling with the profound impact of domestic violence that struck so close to home. May the pursuit of justice in this case inspire strength and a collective resolve to support one another toward a safer, brighter future. Thanks for reading this article, we appreciate it!
