Get ready for political mayhem as Cook County unveils a bold new plan to tackle anticipated chaos during the Democratic National Convention! 🚨 #News #Chicago #DNC2024
Bold New Move by Cook County Court!
CHICAGO, IL – In a dramatic move, the Circuit Court of Cook County is gearing up for potential chaos as the Democratic National Convention (DNC) lands in Chicago this August.
With the political spectacle set for August 19-22 at the United Center, local authorities aren’t taking any chances. They’re opening a temporary court facility to handle an expected surge in arrests.
Judges Clear Schedules for DNC Mayhem
Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans isn’t leaving anything to chance. In a recent announcement, he revealed extensive plans to ensure the judicial system can cope with the expected influx of cases.
Judges have cleared their calendars of non-essential proceedings, focusing solely on the potential fallout from the convention.
Temporary Court Facility: A Precaution for Unrest
In anticipation of possible unrest, the court will use a portion of its former facility on West Belmont Avenue.
This temporary setup, operational from 8 a.m. until midnight, is designed to swiftly handle cases if the Chicago Police Department (CPD) reports multiple arrests. This proactive step aims to balance security measures while respecting the rights of those arrested.
Backup Plan for Overflowing Arrests
If the number of arrests exceeds the West Belmont Avenue facility’s capacity, the court has a backup plan.
The CPD will process overflow cases at alternate locations, which will then be heard at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse. This multi-layered approach ensures no case falls through the cracks during the DNC frenzy.
Police and Judges on High Alert
Fifty-seven additional judges have been trained on the Pretrial Fairness Act to step in if needed. They will be on standby at both the West Belmont Avenue facility and the Leighton Criminal Courthouse, ready to tackle the expected surge in cases.
Meanwhile, officers from various police departments, including the Illinois State Police and Cook County Sheriff’s Office, will be excused from court testimonies to focus on DNC security.
Jury Duty and Court Employees Adjustments
During this period, individuals summoned for jury duty will be placed on standby. Jury trials for criminal cases scheduled between August 12 and 30 at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse will move to the Third Municipal District Courthouse in Rolling Meadows if rescheduling isn’t possible.
Court employees near the convention, including those at the Daley Center and the Domestic Violence Courthouse, will operate remotely, ensuring the courthouse runs smoothly despite the chaos.
Administrative Orders to Maintain Order
Chief Judge Evans has issued two General Administrative Orders, 2024-11 and 2024-12, to maintain order during the convention. These measures reflect a coordinated effort among county, city, state, and federal agencies to prepare for the DNC.
DNC Security: A Unified Effort
As the city braces for the Democratic National Convention, the cooperation between various agencies underscores the seriousness of the preparations. Chicago is pulling out all the stops to ensure a balance between security and justice during this high-stakes political event.
