ST. PAUL, MN – Imagine sifting through a dusty old filing cabinet, only to stumble upon a document potentially worth millions. That’s exactly what happened when a long-forgotten copy of the U.S. Constitution was recently discovered.
Hidden away for years, this historic document from September 28, 1787, was uncovered during an estate cleanout in North Carolina and is now expected to bring in millions when it goes up for sale. It just goes to show, you never know what’s hidden in estate sales, thrift shops, or grandma’s attic!
The document is one of around 100 original copies ordered by the Secretary of Congress, Charles Thomson, to initiate the ratification process. Only eight of these copies are known to have survived, making this a particularly rare find.
Rare Discovery Sparks Auction Frenzy
The discovery took place at Hayes Farm, North Carolina, where the Constitution was buried among old furniture and books. It originally belonged to Samuel Johnston, a former governor of North Carolina from 1787 to 1789. Johnston’s ownership of the document adds an additional layer of historical importance, further increasing its value.
Brunk Auctions, the firm overseeing the sale, is already seeing significant interest. The auction house’s specialists have called this discovery a “prize of all prizes” for collectors of rare historical documents. Online bidding has already started at $1 million, with the final sale slated for September 28. Brunk Auctions expects the final price to go much higher.
Bidders Eye Record-Breaking Sale
The document is in good condition for its age, showing only light wear and staining. With such a rare piece of American history up for grabs, experts are predicting a potential record-breaking sale.
In 2021, Sotheby’s sold a different copy of the Constitution for an astounding $43.2 million. Given the historic value of this newly discovered version, some believe it could fetch a similar price.
Historical document experts suggested the final bid could reach upwards of $20 million, depending on the intensity of the competition. The document will be sold alongside other significant items, including a first draft of the Articles of Confederation from 1776.
Before the auction, collectors and history enthusiasts had the chance to view the rare copy at Federal Hall National Memorial in New York on September 13. It’s now headed for a final showdown as potential bidders prepare for what could be one of the most expensive Constitution sales in history.
