Rochester, Minnesota – Costco shoppers in the Midwest can breathe a sigh of relief as the retailer has decided to keep its membership fees at their current prices for the time being. However, CFO Richard Galanti hinted that a fee hike is not a matter of if, but when.
Costco’s Thriving Membership Base
During the company’s second-quarter earnings call, Galanti revealed that Costco’s renewal rates, new member sign-ups, and loyalty are all trending in the right direction. These factors play a crucial role in determining when the company will increase its membership fees. Costco’s total cardholders have surged to an impressive 132 million, marking a 7.3% increase compared to the same period last year.
A Well-Timed Hike on the Horizon 🛒💰
Galanti emphasized that the decision to raise membership fees won’t be made simply because things have slowed down a bit. Instead, the company is focusing on its strong performance and the fact that almost all metrics are moving in the right direction. With plenty of runway left, Costco is confident that the time for a fee hike will come eventually.
Passing the Torch to a New CFO
As Galanti prepares to retire after nearly 40 years, he joked that the membership fee increase will likely happen on the watch of his successor, former Kroger CFO Gary Millerchip. The last time Costco raised its membership prices was back in 2017, and historically, these hikes have occurred at roughly 5.5-year intervals.
Membership Fees Boost Costco’s Revenue
Despite the decision to keep membership fees steady, Costco still managed to bring in an impressive $1.1 billion from membership fees in the second quarter. This marks an 8% increase from the nearly $1.03 billion the company earned in the same quarter a year earlier. However, Costco’s overall second-quarter revenue of $58.44 billion fell short of analysts’ estimates of $59.16 billion.
