ISLE OF PALMS, SC – Have you ever found yourself trusting GPS, even when your gut tells you otherwise? That kind of blind trust in technology almost turned deadly for a couple visiting Isle of Palms, South Carolina, when they drove their car straight into a creek over the weekend. We have photos from the scene at the bottom of this article!

GPS Misguides Couple into Dangerous Waters

The couple, both in their 60s, were trying to leave the parking lot of Islander 71 Fish House and Raw Bar on Saturday night, just before 10:30 p.m. Following GPS directions, they made a tragic mistake, driving down a nearby boat ramp and into Morgan Creek.

Johnny Himmelsbach, a bartender at Islander 71 and a former lifeguard, was quick to act when he heard the splash and commotion. Without hesitation, he dove into the water to help. Fellow bartender Shannon Standhardt rushed to a nearby fire station to get additional help.

By the time emergency responders arrived, Himmelsbach had already pulled the couple from the sinking vehicle. Fortunately, they had begun rolling down their windows as the car entered the water, making the rescue possible.

Local Hero Bartender Saves the Day

“I cannot say enough things about Johnny and his heroic actions to help these innocent travelers,” Standhardt told WCIV-TV.

“We as his friends and coworkers already know how special he is, but as a close friend and employee of mine, he’s truly an angel. He deserves all the credit from this. I can’t say we will ever forget this evening and be so grateful that this accident didn’t have a different outcome. The details of this incident we will forever remember.”

The Isle of Palms Fire Department, along with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office dive team, later assisted in recovering the submerged vehicle. Thankfully, there were no environmental impacts, and the boat ramp was reopened the following day.

In a world where GPS is often seen as infallible, this incident serves as a terrifying reminder that technology isn’t always right—and the consequences can be disastrous. Thanks to the quick thinking and bravery of Himmelsbach, a catastrophe was averted.
