You Won’t Believe The Crime Rates Stats In Rochester, Minnesota
Good news: Rochester, Minnesota’s crime rates took a nosedive last year, and you won’t believe what the police have to say about it! 🚔 #RochesterCrime #CommunityPolicing #SaferStreets
Rochester, Minnesota – Here’s some great news this morning from southern Minnesota: Rochester’s finest had their hands full last year, responding to over 62,000 incidents! But get this – most crime categories actually went down. Yep, you read that right! Especially when it comes to all kinds of theft, sexual offenses, and drug overdoses.
Sexual Offenses and Car Part Thefts Plummeted
Take sexual offenses, for example. In 2021, there were 171 cases. But last year? Only 94! And don’t even get us started on car part thefts. Those dropped by more than 65 percent, from 199 cases in 2021 to just 68 last year.
Repeat Offenders Behind Bars
So, what’s behind this drop in crime? Well, according to Captain Jeff Stilwell from the Community Services Division, a big reason is that the same few thieves were responsible for a lot of these crimes – and they got caught!
Homelessness and Trespassing on the Rise
Now, it wasn’t all good news. Some areas, like trespassing, disorderly conduct, and weapon law violations, actually saw an increase. In fact, trespassing cases more than doubled from 2021 to last year. Captain Stilwell says this is because of the growing issue of homelessness, especially downtown and in public spaces.
But don’t worry, the police department is on it. They’re planning to do more outreach and education before cracking down on enforcement. So, if you see someone sleeping on a park bench, just know that the police are working on getting them the help they need.
Rochester Handling Growth Like a Champ
Overall, Captain Stilwell says last year was a pretty good one, crime-wise. And despite Rochester’s growth, crime isn’t going up along with it. That’s because the police department is committed to community engagement and building relationships.
