WARNING: Iowa’s Roads Are More Dangerous Than Ever!
😱 Iowa’s roads are more dangerous than ever! State Patrol says daily death rate was 20% higher last year than the 5-year average. 🚗💨 #IowaSafetyFirst #SlowDown #ArriveAlive
Des Moines, Iowa – Despite the Iowa State Patrol teaming up with several states to reduce the number of fatalities on Iowa’s roads, their efforts have been in vain. The daily death rate on Iowa‘s roads for 2023 was a whopping 20% higher than the 5-year average. It’s a sad reality that people aren’t thinking about each other’s safety on the roads.
Triple-Digit Speeding Tickets Soar
State Trooper Bob Conrad says they’re seeing more and more people not just speeding, but hitting speeds over 100 MPH! In just the first two months of the year, the patrol has already written 117 tickets to drivers going more than 100 MPH. It’s no wonder the death toll is rising with people driving so recklessly.
Distracted Driving to Blame
Trooper Conrad thinks the problem boils down to distracted driving. People just aren’t paying attention to how fast they’re going. The state patrol is trying all sorts of enforcement projects to get people to slow down, but they need buy-in from drivers to make a real difference.
Warmer Weather Worries
With the warmer months coming up, Trooper Conrad is worried about how many more people won’t make it home safely.
Lori Martin and her family, who were returning from a 2-week vacation on the West Mississippi Gulf Coast, are just one of the thousands of Iowans who travel I-380 every day. Martin says she didn’t see many people speeding, but she was keeping an eye out and staying out of the fast lane if she saw somebody going faster than her.
Keep Iowa’s Roads Safe
It’s always nice to go away, but it’s even nicer to come home safely. Let’s all do our part to keep Iowa’s roads safe and bring that daily death rate back down.
