HOUSTON, TX – Authorities are investigating after sanitation workers in Texas discovered the body of a deceased newborn inside a trash compactor on Wednesday.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a statement Wednesday that deputies responded to a residential neighborhood on the 13200 block of Fountain Crest Drive in Houston shortly before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday after sanitation workers reported finding “what appears to be a deceased newborn male infant amongst the collected trash waste.”
Investigators say the baby appeared to be between one and 30 days old. The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the newborn’s cause of death.
The sheriff’s office said the workers had picked up trash from several streets and were compacting it to make room for more when they discovered the baby.
Investigators were canvassing the area, and kept the truck in case any of the content could provide clues as to where the baby came from.
The sheriff’s office is reminding people of the state’s Moses Law, which allows parents to drop off newborns they are unable to keep at hospitals or fire stations with no questions asked.
