DENVER, CO – A Colorado dentist, already facing accusations of fatally poisoning his wife, has now been charged with attempting to arrange the murder of a police detective investigating the case. James Craig, who had been set to stand trial for the first-degree murder of his wife Angela, is now confronting additional charges that could further complicate his defense and delay court proceedings.
New Allegations Emerge
Last week, prosecutors leveled two new charges against James Craig: solicitation to commit murder and solicitation to commit perjury. While the charging documents did not specify the intended victim, Aurora Police spokesperson Joe Moylan confirmed that Craig is accused of trying to have an Aurora police detective killed. The detective was working on the investigation into the death of Craig’s wife.
The latest developments come on the heels of a setback for Craig’s defense team. On November 21, just as the dentist was about to face trial, his attorney Harvey Steinberg withdrew from the case, citing a professional conflict. The following day, prosecutors filed the new charges against Craig. As a result, Craig’s trial for the murder of his wife has been postponed indefinitely.
A Tragic Loss
At the heart of this unfolding legal saga is the untimely death of Angela Craig. The 43-year-old mother of six died in March 2023, and a coroner’s report revealed the cause to be poisoning from cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a chemical found in over-the-counter eye drops.
James and Angela Craig had been married for 23 years and shared six children together.
A Pattern of Alleged Manipulation
The new accusations against James Craig are not the first time prosecutors have alleged the dentist engaged in schemes to undermine the case against him. According to court documents, Craig is accused of smuggling a letter out of jail with the help of an inmate and an adult daughter. The letter reportedly contained a request for the daughter to fabricate a video showing Angela Craig asking her husband to obtain poisons on her behalf.
In another alleged plot, Craig is said to have asked a fellow inmate to plant fake journal entries in the couple’s home. These entries would have suggested that Angela Craig had died by suicide. The inmate apparently refused to comply and only came forward to authorities after an initial hearing reviewing the evidence against Craig.
An Uncertain Future
As the case against James Craig takes new turns, his future remains uncertain. With his original trial delayed and a new lawyer yet to be named, Craig is set to appear in court on December 16. He has maintained his plea of not guilty to the original charge of first-degree murder.
The death of Angela Craig sent shockwaves through her community and left six children without a mother. As her husband faces mounting legal challenges and disturbing allegations, the focus remains on uncovering the truth behind her tragic and untimely death. The outcome of this complex case could have far-reaching consequences for all involved.
