ST. PAUL, MN; OSLO, NORWAY – One American tourist is dead after a replica Viking ship encountered rough seas and capsized off the coast of Norway Tuesday evening while attempting the so-called “Viking Voyage” from the Faroe Islands to Norway.

The 30-foot replica Viking ship, called the Naddoddur, is an open-air wooden vessel powered by sails and oars. The voyage had reportedly already been delayed several days due to weather.

After the boat sent a distress call, rescue boats and helicopters from multiple government and volunteer agencies responded to the area. The Naddoddur capsized about 60 miles off the west coast of Norway.

The non-profit volunteer rescue organization Redningsselskapet deployed a boat to the scene to assist in the search. A video shared by the organization shows the stormy weather and rough seas at the time.

“The weather conditions are very demanding, with winds up to 40 knots and waves of 5 meters [16.4 feet]. Large resources have been invested in the rescue operation,” the organization wrote alongside the video.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of Southern Norway, a government agency, late Tuesday said five people were safely rescued, with one still missing. Five people, including the skipper, made it onto a lifeboat, and were airlifted by a helicopter with the assistance of the Norwegian coast guard ship KV Bergen.

The agency early Wednesday said it shifted from a search and rescue operation to a search and recovery operation, with the individual who remains unaccounted for presumed dead.

“The prevailing weather conditions, as well as the time that has passed, mean that the action now switches to Search for presumed dead,” the agency wrote on X.

Later Wednesday, the body of a woman described by Norwegian media as an American citizen in her 20s was recovered near where the Naddoddur capsized. An investigation into the incident is underway.
