ST. PAUL, MN – In a surprising twist that underscores a significant shift in the American psyche, a new Gallup poll has revealed that national pride is teetering near an all-time low. Once a source of unwavering strength, extreme pride in being American has been steadily declining, painting a vivid picture of a nation grappling with its identity.
Dwindling Numbers of Extreme Pride
A recent Gallup poll reveals a continuing decline in extreme national pride among U.S. adults. The trend, noticeable since 2015, has now brought the number of extremely proud Americans close to a record low.
The Gallup survey, conducted between June 3 and June 23 with 1,005 randomly selected adults, found that only 41% of respondents said they are “extremely proud” to be American. This percentage falls within the 38% to 43% range observed over the past five years.

The combined total of Americans who consider themselves either “extremely” or “very proud” stands at 67%, barely above the record low of 63% in 2020. Additionally, 18% of respondents identified as “moderately proud,” while 10% stated they are “only a little” proud, and 5% admitted they are “not at all” proud.

A significant disparity in national pride emerges when broken down by political affiliation. The Gallup poll found that 59% of Republicans reported being “extremely proud” to be American, compared to 34% of Democrats and 36% of independents.
