STANTON, DE – A Delaware man suspected of shooting an occupant of his ex-spouse’s home then setting it on fire Sunday was shot and killed by police after an hours-long standoff, authorities said.

Delaware State Police said in a statement Monday that troopers initially responded to an Exxon station in Stanton at around 9:41 a.m. after an armed man was reported at a nearby residence. A short time later, a separate call came in reporting a house fire at a residence on Limestone Road.

According to preliminary investigation, the suspect, a 57-year-old man who was not immediately identified, “forcibly entered” the home on Limestone Road, which belonged to his ex-spouse, who was not there.

The suspect fired multiple rounds at two occupants of the home, striking a 22-year-old woman. The second occupant, a 20-year-old man, fled to the nearby Exxon to call police.

The suspect then set fire to the home and fled in a vehicle. When troopers, along with fire and EMS personnel, responded to the fire, they found the 22-year-old victim with a gunshot wound, and began lifesaving efforts.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was withheld pending family notification.

The Delaware State Police Aviation Section located the suspect vehicle and suspect near the C&D Canal. Troopers attempted to negotiate with the suspect, who had climbed onto the lower level of a high-tension electrical tower, “over the course of several hours.”

State police say the suspect opened fire on troopers, prompting three troopers to return fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
