DETROIT, MI – The Detroit Police Department is seeking the public’s help identifying an arson suspect captured on video lighting cars on fire in a post office parking lot last week.
Police said the incident occurred at around 1:43 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, in the parking lot of the post office located on the 17300 block of Harper Avenue.
The video, which appears to be captured from the dashboard camera of another vehicle in the parking lot, shows the suspect, wearing a dark-colored hoodie, approaching a white 2018 Chevy Traverse.
The suspect uses an object to break the front passenger-side window of the Chevy, and pours an accelerant inside the vehicle.
The suspect then ignites the accelerant, which creates an explosive force that knocks the suspect back and to the ground as all the doors and the trunk pop their seals. The Chevy fills with flames before the video stops.
According to police, four cars were burned, and a total of six were damaged.
The suspect is described as a heavy-set man, last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with a white shirt underneath, and blue jeans.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward or submit an anonymous tip.
