DETROIT, MI – Flames engulfed the vehicle as screams pierced the Michigan morning air. Two women, trapped inside their car, were drenched in gasoline and set ablaze just moments after arriving at work. Their attacker, believed to be a former colleague, had allegedly targeted them in a calculated act of violence.
The two women, both in their 50s and 60s, were preparing to exit their vehicle at a building on W. Grand Boulevard in Detroit around 6 a.m. when the attack unfolded.
According to Detroit Fire Department Fire Investigation Division Chief Dennis Richardson, the assailant approached the car, poured gasoline on the vehicle, and used a cigarette lighter to ignite the flames.
Brutal Attack Unfolds Outside Workplace
“He encountered two other employees that he perceived as being part of the reason he was suspended or terminated,” said Detroit Police Chief James White.
“He took an accelerant to the vehicle they were sitting in, poured it on the vehicle or around the vehicle, lit that vehicle on fire. They were inside the vehicle as I indicated,” White continued.
The suspect, who is believed to have worked at the same business, attempted to flee after setting the fire. However, a witness chased him down and held him until authorities arrived. “We arrive in minutes, and take him into custody,” White confirmed.
The victims were transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital with severe injuries, while the suspect suffered minor injuries and was also taken to a hospital.
Police and Fire Departments Investigate
While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have not yet released the name of the attacker. “My last briefing was that it was likely to be an attempted murder charge,” White said, adding that arson charges were also being considered.
The suspect is reportedly known to police, with a history of violent behavior.
“We have a lot of people who appear to be emotionally unregulated. You have situations where problem-solving in conflict just don’t exist anymore,” White commented.
However, he declined to elaborate on the suspect’s past offenses, citing concerns about tainting a future jury.
As investigators continue to piece together the details, both the victims and the city of Detroit are left grappling with the shock and horror of the incident.
