DIGHTON, KS – In the west-central part of the Sunflower State lies the unassuming town of Dighton, Kansas. This sleepy community, with its population of just 950 folks, seems an unlikely setting for a series of extraordinary events that captured the imagination of the nation. Yet, back in the 1970s, Dighton found itself at the center of a mystery that remains unsolved to this day.
This is a paranormal mystery from our ongoing blog series, The Midwest X-Files. Here at JackAndKitty.com, we love highlighting the best of the Midwest. But for this story we’d like you to think of us as your own personal Mulder and Scully – except with goofy Minnesota accents. Hehe. Ready to dig into the case? Let’s go!
π A Night Sky Filled with Wonder
It all began in 1972, a year that saw an astonishing 40 reported UFO sightings in western Kansas alone. Dighton, it seemed, was the epicenter of this strange phenomenon. Dozens of residents, from the town’s police chief to its hardworking farmers, claimed to have witnessed something truly out of this world.
These were not the ravings of madmen or attention-seekers, but the earnest accounts of level-headed, respectable members of the community. They spoke of mysterious lights hovering in the night sky, moving in ways that defied explanation. The police, determined to get to the bottom of the matter, launched an investigation.
π The Chase Is On
As patrol cars raced towards the enigmatic lights, a peculiar game of cat and mouse ensued. The closer the police drew, the faster the lights seemed to move away. The police chief, undeterred, pushed his vehicle to its limits, reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. Yet, the lights remained tantalizingly out of reach.
The local Air Force Base, when questioned, denied any knowledge of low-flying aircraft that could account for the sightings. The mystery only deepened.
π° A Tantalizing Reward
Word of the Dighton UFO sightings spread far and wide, capturing the attention of the media. The National Enquirer, a publication known for its sensational stories, offered a staggering $50,000 reward to anyone who could provide proof that the lights originated from another planet. To this day, the reward remains unclaimed.
π A Legacy of Wonder
As the years passed, the fervor surrounding the Dighton UFO sightings gradually faded. The town returned to its quiet, unassuming ways. Yet, the memory of those strange nights lingers on, a testament to the enduring power of the unknown.
For those who traverse the wide-open spaces of western Kansas, the story of Dighton serves as a reminder to keep one’s eyes on the horizon. After all, who knows what marvels might be waiting, just beyond the reach of our understanding?

It was the late 90βs, maybe 99 and I was driving back from Cathouse headed west on hwy 4 north of Dighton. It was late at night, if I recall, well after midnight and my stereo suddenly went staticky and to the left up in the sky was a string of lights, almost moving along side me and then suddenly broke apart and disappeared in different directions. Never told anyone, thought they would think I was crazy.
