ST. PAUL, MN – Not all luxury cruises live up to their glamorous reputation. A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that some luxury cruise ships are far from clean, with disturbing findings that include pest infestations and filthy conditions.
The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program regularly assesses cruise ship hygiene, assigning scores out of 100 to promote sanitary practices and prevent gastrointestinal diseases. Unfortunately, the latest evaluations show a troubling trend, with ten vessels receiving scores below 89, which is considered a failing grade.
Shocking Scores: The Dirtiest Cruise Ships Revealed
At the bottom of the list is Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Inspiration, which earned an alarming score of just 62!
The report detailed various health code violations aboard the ship, including a beer tap covered in grime, both live and dead insects at the pool bar, and a decaying bird infested with maggots located near an outdoor grill. Additionally, food items that should have been refrigerated were stored at improper temperatures.
Disturbing Violations: What Went Wrong on Board
In response to these violations, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises stated that they have maintained high hygiene standards over the years. However, they acknowledged this inspection result as an opportunity to improve processes on board.
The cruise line expressed regret that their ship did not meet required cleanliness standards for the first time and committed to addressing the identified issues to enhance guest experiences.
Other ships that fared poorly include the Caribbean Princess, Carnival Breeze, and Evrima, each scoring 86. Reports indicated that the Caribbean Princess had flies and insects in its kitchens, while the Carnival Breeze struggled with pest control and left food trays exposed to the elements.
Moreover, the crew bathrooms on the Carnival Breeze were noted to be excessively littered. The Evrima had fruit flies around its juicing machine, lacked rat guards, and had not replaced the whirlpool filters in two years.
Clean Ships, Happy Passengers: The Standards to Follow
On a brighter note, several cruise ships managed to achieve perfect scores of 100. Notable names include Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Spirit, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Ascent, Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy, and Royal Caribbean International’s Brilliance of the Seas, all of which exemplify high standards of cleanliness.
