EL RENO, OK – A close call on Interstate 40 near El Reno, Oklahoma this week has many questioning just how dangerous a simple distraction can be. In a shocking video shared by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), one semi truck side-swipes another that had been disabled on the side of the highway—an incident that could have ended far worse.
What Happened on the Highway
The crash took place on Monday afternoon at approximately 2:15 p.m., along the shoulder of Interstate 40 near Country Club Road in El Reno.
A semi truck, traveling in the same direction, slammed into another that was parked on the shoulder after experiencing mechanical issues.
Fortunately, the incident was captured by the dashboard camera of Trooper Kelby Peoples, who was driving behind the moving semi at the time of the collision.
Driver’s Explanation for the Crash
The driver of the semi that caused the accident explained that the crash occurred because he had “reached down to grab his water bottle,” at the moment he veered into the disabled truck.
The brief distraction was enough to cause a serious collision. Despite the severity of the crash, both drivers walked away without injuries.
OHP’s Warning to Drivers
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol used the dashcam footage to share a strong reminder with the public about the importance of staying focused while driving.
“This crash could have been deadly but amazingly, there were no injuries,” the OHP stated in a post alongside the video. They further urged drivers to avoid distractions, as even a momentary lapse in attention can lead to dangerous consequences.
