CHICAGO, IL – The village of Dolton, Illinois, is facing a financial crisis, with a recent investigation revealing a staggering $3.5 million deficit. However, Mayor Tiffany Henyard, who is at the center of this controversy, has been conspicuously absent, leaving many questions unanswered.

Financial Mismanagement Uncovered

The financial turmoil in Dolton was brought to light following an investigation spearheaded by former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Hired by the Dolton Village Board to probe Mayor Henyard’s handling of village funds, Lightfoot’s preliminary findings paint a troubling picture. The report reveals that the village’s general fund was deep in the red, with a negative balance of $3.65 million as of May 31.

The investigation also highlighted a pattern of reckless spending, particularly through credit card use. There were instances of exorbitant expenses, including $40,000 spent on Amazon purchases in a single day, with no clear documentation to justify the spending.

The report suggests that the credit card expenditures are largely unaccounted for, raising concerns about the potential misuse of taxpayer money.

Mayor Henyard’s Whereabouts Unknown

In the wake of this damning report, Mayor Henyard has been notably absent from public view. On Friday, she was not present at the Dolton Village Hall, and her office has not responded to multiple requests for comment.

Village employees have remained tight-lipped about her absence, offering no information on her whereabouts or when she might return.

This silence from the mayor’s office has only fueled speculation and concern among residents and village officials alike, who are eager for answers regarding the village’s financial health and Henyard’s role in the crisis.

Lavish Spending and Lack of Transparency

The investigation has uncovered more than just a significant deficit. It has also revealed a culture of unchecked spending within the village administration.

The report highlights that village trustees were denied access to crucial financial documents, such as bank statements, for an extended period. Trustee Brittney Norwood noted that the last time she had access to these statements was in September of the previous year, at which point the village was already $7 million in debt.

Lightfoot’s investigation also uncovered questionable spending practices, including self-promoting advertisements and expensive dinners, all funded by taxpayer money.

There are also lingering questions about substantial overtime payments to certain village police officers, with some raking in six figures in overtime alone—more than doubling their base pay.

Unanswered Questions and Community Concerns

As the financial crisis unfolds, the village of Dolton faces mounting pressure to address the issues raised in the investigation. The community is left in the dark, with no clear communication from Mayor Henyard or the village trustees, who have also refrained from commenting on the report.

The absence of leadership during this critical time has left residents and officials alike questioning the future of Dolton’s financial stability. The village must now navigate the fallout from the investigation and work towards restoring trust and transparency in its financial dealings.
