TAMPA, FL – A terrifying scene unfolded in Tampa Bay, Florida on Friday evening when a boat carrying two people and their dog sank after colliding with the wake of a cruise ship. The trio was left stranded, clinging to a buoy as the clock ticked down on their survival. What followed was a rapid and coordinated rescue operation involving multiple agencies, bringing the boaters and their dog to safety.
The Rescue Effort Unfolds
The incident occurred near Gadsden Point, just off the coast of Tampa, at around 6:11 p.m.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the boat capsized after it hit the wake from a passing cruise ship. Despite the chaos, the two passengers and their dog managed to swim to a nearby buoy, where they waited for help.
In a video shared by the sheriff’s office, you can see the desperate trio clinging to the buoy as rescue teams approach. The sheriff’s air and marine units, along with local firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard, quickly mobilized to assist in the operation. The video captures the moment when the air crew first spots the stranded group and directs three rescue boats to the scene.
Rescue Operations and Victims’ Condition
As the boats arrived, the rescue team swiftly pulled the boaters and their dog from the buoy. Both people were then transported to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. Thankfully, the dog was also safely recovered, ensuring all members of the family were accounted for.
Sheriff Chad Chronister praised the swift actions of all agencies involved, stating, “Our team’s coordinated response with other agencies led to the successful rescue of two people who desperately needed help.”
