NASHVILLE, TN – A Tennessee lake outing turned tragic when a mother of three drowned while attempting to save her 12-year-old daughter. The incident, which occurred on August 4th at Percy Priest Lake in Nashville, has raised concerns about the accessibility of safety warnings for non-English speaking visitors.

We understand that life is a gift from God, and in moments of tragedy, we seek His comfort and guidance. This devastating loss reminds us to lean on our faith and the love of our community. We can take heart in the words of Jesus: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Mother Drowns in Attempt to Save Daughter

Amarilia “Lileana” Vamaca, a native of Guatemala, lost her life while trying to help her daughter, who was struggling in the lake’s waters. The family, who primarily speaks Spanish, reportedly missed the warning signs posted around the lake due to the language barrier.

Vamaca’s husband, Martin Ambrosio, was swimming in another part of the lake when he noticed his daughter was in trouble. By the time he arrived, Vamaca had already entered the water and was struggling herself.

Despite the efforts of several bystanders who attempted to rescue her and performed CPR until paramedics arrived, Vamaca was later pronounced dead at the hospital after being taken off life support.

Language Barrier and Lack of Multilingual Signage

The tragedy has sparked a discussion about the need for multilingual safety signage at public recreational areas. Ambrosio has since advocated for the implementation of clear warnings in both English and Spanish, stressing that his family was unable to understand the posted signs due to the language barrier.

The family’s experience highlights the potential risks faced by non-English speaking communities when visiting popular destinations that lack multilingual information.

Community Response and Fundraising Efforts

In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, the local community has rallied around the family. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help cover the costs of returning Vamaca’s body to her homeland of Guatemala.

As of Wednesday morning, the fundraiser had garnered over $6,000 toward its $10,000 goal. Consider helping out here.

Moving Forward After Tragedy

The loss of Vamaca has left her family devastated. As they navigate this difficult time, they have turned to their faith for comfort. Vamaca’s death has also served as a poignant reminder of the importance of accessible safety measures for all, regardless of language.

The incident underscores the need for greater awareness and action to ensure that public spaces are safe and welcoming for everyone, including those who may not speak English.

In the face of this sorrowful event, we turn to God for strength and healing. As we grieve, we are reminded of the hope that lies in our faith. “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul” (Psalm 23:1-3). May this family find peace and comfort in God’s embrace.
