COON RAPIDS, MN – A serious crash occurred in Coon Rapids, Minnesota on August 18, involving a 20-year-old driver from Mounds View who was intoxicated. The collision resulted in the death of a 26-year-old woman and her unborn child.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Makayla April Sua Richardson, faces multiple charges.
These include criminal vehicular homicide, criminal vehicular operation, and driving while intoxicated. Richardson is currently held in jail with bail set at $400,000.
Crash Incident Report
According to police reports, the accident happened at the intersection of Coon Rapids Boulevard and Springbrook Drive.
Richardson’s vehicle, a Ford F-350 with a trailer, collided with a Toyota Highlander. The Highlander was turning left onto Springbrook Drive while the light was green.
Melinda Thao, the passenger in the Toyota Highlander, was declared deceased at the scene.
Thao, who was five months pregnant, was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital. The driver of the Toyota survived but suffered broken ribs.
Driver’s Condition and Actions
Richardson admitted to consuming alcohol before driving, claiming she had one drink. She also acknowledged speeding and driving without a valid license.
An empty alcoholic beverage can was found in her vehicle. Richardson’s blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.18, well above the legal limit of 0.08.
If convicted, Richardson faces a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $20,000. The investigation into the crash is ongoing as authorities review the evidence and proceed with legal proceedings.
