CHARLESTON, SC – An emotionally charged courtroom in Charleston, South Carolina, witnessed raw, heart-wrenching moments on Monday as the drunk driver responsible for the tragic death of bride Samantha Miller was sentenced. Jamie Lee Komoroski, 26, pleaded guilty to killing Miller on her wedding night in April 2023. The emotional testimonies from Miller’s father, Brad Warner, and her grieving widower, Aric Hutchinson, painted a painful picture of the devastation left behind.
The Tragic Crash
The incident occurred on the night of April 28, 2023, when Samantha Miller and her new husband, Aric Hutchinson, were leaving their Folly Beach wedding reception in a golf cart. They were struck by Komoroski, who was speeding at 65 mph in a 25 mph zone. Komoroski’s blood-alcohol content was determined to be more than three times the legal limit. Miller was killed instantly, still in her wedding dress. Hutchinson was seriously injured and hospitalized.
Plea and Sentencing
During Monday’s hearing, Komoroski pleaded guilty to several charges, including reckless homicide, DUI causing death or bodily harm, and felony DUI. For her actions, she was sentenced to 25 years in prison, with the sentences for the other charges running concurrently.
Komoroski, appearing visibly remorseful, addressed the court, acknowledging her guilt. “I will use the time to better myself,” she said, expressing deep regret for her actions. However, her apology did little to ease the pain of Miller’s family, who had to come to terms with the irreplaceable loss.
Emotional Impact on the Family
Brad Warner, the father of the bride, delivered a searing statement in which he spoke of the lasting impact of his daughter’s death. “For the rest of my life, I’m gonna hate you,” he told Komoroski, his voice filled with anguish. “And when I arrive in hell, and you come there, I’ll open the door for you.”
Warner also shared a deeply personal reflection, explaining how he had been the victim of a hit-and-run as a child, and had only forgiven the driver years later—just to face the unbearable loss of his daughter in such a tragic manner.
Aric Hutchinson, still recovering from his own injuries, shared his sorrow, saying, “I wish I had gone that night, so she didn’t have to go alone.” Through tears, Hutchinson described how his life has been consumed by grief. “I don’t have joy, I don’t have passion, I don’t have drive. I am stuck in hell,” he said. He also recalled his last moments with Samantha, holding her close on the golf cart and sharing a tender kiss before the crash. “She told me she didn’t want the night to end and I kissed her on the forehead and that’s the last thing I remember.”
Samantha’s mother, speaking through the deep anguish of watching her son suffer, even wondered aloud if it would have been better if both Aric and Samantha had perished together. “Maybe it would have been better if Aric and Sam had been taken together,” she said, her heart breaking for her son.
Komoroski’s History and Actions
Komoroski’s actions leading up to the crash revealed a severe level of recklessness. When authorities arrived at the scene, she was so intoxicated that she initially believed she had been the victim of a crash herself, telling officers, “I did nothing wrong.” Her refusal to take a field sobriety test only added to the gravity of the situation, as responders noted her strong smell of alcohol. Reports indicated that she had consumed alcohol earlier that evening, despite claiming she had only had a beer and a tequila drink before the crash.
Komoroski had been out on bail under house arrest since March, and her trial had just begun when she pleaded guilty.
In a chilling detail that surfaced during the case, Komoroski was recorded in jail phone calls with her sister. During these calls, she expressed her expectation of returning to a better life, saying she anticipated living her “best life” within two years, despite the grave consequences of her actions.
Legal and Financial Consequences
In addition to her criminal conviction, Komoroski is also facing a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Aric Hutchinson. The suit, which names the bars where Komoroski drank, alleges that they were negligent in serving her alcohol. Several of these bars have already reached a $1.3 million settlement.
A Time to Honor and Remember
The courtroom heard the grieving voices of those whose lives have been shattered. It is important to recognize the depth of their loss and the ongoing impact it will have on their lives. Samantha Miller, just 34 years old, had a bright future ahead of her, filled with love and promise. Her death leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of her family and friends. Aric Hutchinson, in the early days of his marriage, now faces a life of sorrow and uncertainty.
In such moments of overwhelming grief, many turn to their faith for comfort. As we reflect on the pain caused by this tragedy, let us hold close the words of the Apostle Paul: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
Moving Forward
While the 25-year sentence cannot undo the immense suffering caused by Komoroski’s reckless actions, it serves as a reminder of the devastating effects of drunk driving. It is also a moment for the community to come together in support of those who have lost so much. For the Hutchinsons and the Warners, the journey ahead will be one of ongoing grief, but also one of remembrance, love, and hope for eventual healing.
