DELAND, FL – Sheriff’s deputies in Florida on Sunday rescued a family from a barrage of what seemed to be indiscriminate gunfire, and arrested an allegedly intoxicated neighbor.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said a family took cover and called 911 after bullets began “flying” into their home on Evergreen Terrace, north of DeLand, shortly after noon on Sunday.
Body-worn camera video released by the sheriff’s office on Monday showed deputies responding to the scene, and asking a resident where the shots were coming from.
The resident said they at first thought the shots were coming from the front of the house, but that they believed they were coming from the back, after a bullet entered their son’s bedroom window.
“Do you think somebody’s back there actually shooting at your house, or do you think they’re target practicing?” the deputy asked.
“I have no idea,” the resident replied.
Deputies approached the home, where people were lying on the ground taking cover, and escorted them out to safety. None of them were injured in the shooting.
Video showed deputies searching the surrounding area, where they eventually found “an intoxicated neighbor on nearby Virginia Avenue.”
The neighbor, identified as 38-year-old Alex Kudlack, had allegedly been shooting at a tree in his backyard.
Kudlack was arrested and charged with one count of shooting into a dwelling, one count using a firearm while under the influence, two counts child endangerment, and one count criminal mischief, the sheriff’s office said.
