NAPLES, FL – Bodycam footage has surfaced showing Teresa Heitmann, the mayor of Naples, Florida, struggling to perform field sobriety tests after reportedly driving under the influence and running over a neighbor’s mailbox.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening. Heitmannâs blood alcohol level was found to be more than twice the legal limit, as reported by NBC2 News.
A 911 caller described the situation, mentioning that the driver, later identified as the mayor, appeared intoxicated and had damaged a mailbox.
The caller was unsure of the woman’s identity but noted she claimed to be the mayor. When questioned by authorities, Heitmann confirmed her role as the mayor.
Upon police arrival around 10 p.m., Heitmann requested not to be addressed by her official title.
She suggested that her frustration over being cut off in traffic contributed to her impaired driving. Despite her claim of having only consumed a single glass of wine, her blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit of 0.08.
Heitmann was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. She was booked at Naples Jail Center and later released on a $500 bond. An arraignment is set for September 18.
Naples City Manager Jay Boodheshwar expressed disappointment over the situation and assured the community that city services would continue unaffected.
Heitmann, who has served as mayor since 2020 and was re-elected in March, has not yet commented on the incident.
