Lake Geneva, Wisconsin – You’ll never believe where the beloved game Dungeons & Dragons got its start – a quaint little town in Wisconsin called Lake Geneva! This peaceful community of less than 6,000 people is now a pilgrimage site for D&D fans from around the globe.

It all began 50 years ago when Gary Gygax published the very first Dungeons & Dragons game from his basement in Lake Geneva. Gary had a passion for gaming and a wild imagination. He dreamed up a fantastical world of sorcery and adventure – and it would soon captivate millions.

Early Days of Dice-Rolling

Gary’s young son Luke has fond memories of sitting around the family dining table, shaking dice and going on imaginary quests with his dad and friends. Luke was barely old enough to read, but his father gave him a special character to play. Little did they know this game born on that humble table would one day become a global phenomenon!

At the time, the Gygax family was struggling to make ends meet. Gary had recently lost his insurance job and money was tight. To put food on the table, he even tried his hand at shoe repair in the basement. But Gary never stopped dreaming.

Building a Fantasy Empire

With help from his gaming buddy Dave Arneson, Gary created a whole new kind of role-playing game – one set in a realm of fantasy rather than historical battles. When he couldn’t find a company to publish it, Gary boldly decided to do it himself. Hey! That sounds like someone else! Hehe. He and a friend started their own company called Tactical Studies Rules right there in little Lake Geneva.

Sales of Dungeons & Dragons quickly skyrocketed and Gary’s company grew by leaps and bounds. At its peak in the early 1980s, TSR had around 400 employees in Lake Geneva – artists, writers, editors and more. For a tiny town, it was like something straight out of a fantasy novel!

The Lasting Magic of D&D

Today, Gary’s legacy lives on through the game he created. D&D is more popular now than ever, with fans of all ages gathering to roll dice, spin tales of adventure, and forge friendships over imaginary quests.

In recent years, the town of Lake Geneva has embraced its role as the birthplace of Dungeons & Dragons. Gaming enthusiasts can visit the Geneva Lake Museum to see an exhibit on Gary Gygax, “The Wizard of Lake Geneva.” There’s also the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum, located in an old TSR headquarters.  And D&D fans can even rent out the Gygax family home, now dubbed the “Center Street Dungeon!”

Every March, a horde of wizards, warriors and bards descend on Lake Geneva for Gary Con, a convention honoring the legendary creator of Dungeons & Dragons. Started by Gary’s son Luke, it’s a celebration of gaming, imagination, and the power of creativity.

So the next time you sit down to play D&D, remember it all started with one man dreaming of dragons in a tiny Wisconsin town. As Luke Gygax says, it’s much more than just a game – it’s an epic adventure in imagination shared by friends around the world.
