SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA – Two men were arrested last week in Pine Valley, California, after attempting to flee a Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 8. The pair, suspected of drug smuggling, were apprehended following a brief pursuit and crash.
Fleeing the Scene and the Crash
At around 4 p.m. on Thursday, Border Patrol agents attempted to refer a sedan for secondary inspection at an immigration checkpoint on I-8 near Pine Valley. The driver, however, fled west on I-8, leading agents on a short chase. The pursuit ended when the suspect driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash near East Willows Road.
The driver and his passenger then fled on foot but were quickly captured by agents. Both men sustained minor injuries from the crash and were treated at a nearby hospital.
Fentanyl Discovered in the Vehicle
âJust another example of how dangerous it is to run from law enforcement. Not only did these suspected drug smugglers put their own welfare at risk, but also endangered other motorists on the roadway,â said San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel in a statement.
Upon searching the vehicle, agents discovered eight plastic-wrapped packages inside. The packages contained pills that tested positive for fentanyl, weighing a total of 4.73 pounds. The fentanyl pills were seized, and the case was turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for further investigation and federal prosecution.
âOur agents work tirelessly to protect the public and keep dangerous narcotics off the streets,â Agent McGurk-Daniel added.
