Americans Feel the Pinch as Egg Prices Soar Ahead of Easter Celebrations

Rochester, Minnesota – If you’ve been to the grocery store lately, you might have noticed that egg prices are on the rise again. According to the latest Consumer Price Index, the cost of eggs jumped by a whopping 8.4% from January to February. This means that a dozen eggs will now set you back around $3, compared to just $2.50 in December.

While this might not seem like a big deal, it’s putting a strain on many Americans’ budgets, especially with Easter just around the corner. After all, what’s Easter without a good old-fashioned egg hunt or a delicious quiche?

The Fowl Play of Bird Flu

So, what’s causing this egg-spensive problem? Well, it turns out that a limited supply due to an ongoing bird flu outbreak is partly to blame. The avian influenza has affected a staggering 82 million birds across 48 states since early 2022, according to the CDC.

This isn’t the first time the bird flu has wreaked havoc on the egg industry. Last year, it led to record-high prices and widespread shortages, leaving poultry farmers and their customers scrambling. Things started to look up in 2023, but the recent resurgence of the outbreak in November has put a damper on the situation.

Hatching a Plan for Lower Prices

The good news is that the USDA predicts egg prices will decrease by 2.8% in 2024. However, they also note that there’s a wide range of possibilities, from a 17.2% drop to a 14.6% increase, due to the unpredictable nature of retail egg prices.

Overall, most food categories are expected to see price changes below their 20-year historical average this year. So, while you might have to shell out a bit more for your Easter eggs, there’s hope on the horizon for your grocery budget.
