MAPLEWOOD, MN – An eight-year-old girl is being praised for her bravery after helping thwart an attempted robbery at a Maplewood, Minnesota liquor store over the weekend. The suspect, a St. Paul man, reportedly fled the scene after the young girl struck him multiple times with a baseball bat.

Attempted Robbery at Maplewood Liquor Store

On Saturday night, an armed robbery was attempted at Big Discount Liquors on White Bear Avenue North.

The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Conchobhar Joseph Morrell, entered the store and placed what appeared to be a firearm on the counter while demanding money from the store clerk. The firearm was later identified as a BB gun designed to resemble a Sig Sauer .45-caliber handgun.

Courageous Act by the Store Clerk’s Daughter

As the situation escalated, the store clerk, fearing for his daughter’s safety, attempted to wrestle the weapon away from Morrell.

During the struggle, the eight-year-old girl sprang into action, striking the would-be robber several times with a baseball bat.

This unexpected and bold move by the young girl likely played a significant role in disrupting the robbery attempt and protecting her father.

Suspect Apprehended Nearby

Morrell fled the scene on foot but was located by police not far from the store. He resisted arrest but was eventually detained.

When apprehended, he had visible injuries, including a fresh wound beneath his left eye and dried blood on his lips. The police found the clothing items he wore during the robbery attempt, including a blue Amazon Prime vest, in his vehicle parked nearby.

Previous Criminal History

Court records reveal that Morrell has a prior conviction for first-degree aggravated robbery dating back to 2004.

This recent incident has resulted in Morrell being charged with one count of first-degree attempted aggravated robbery.
