MAPLE GROVE, MN – Ready to be outraged? The tight-knit community at Elm Creek Elementary School in Maple Grove, Minnesota has been rocked by shocking news: a trusted member of the school’s parent-teacher organization (PTO) has been accused of stealing more than $188,000 from the group’s bank account over seven years. The alleged theft has left parents and staff reeling, raising questions about trust and transparency in the organization they once relied on.
Emily McMullin, 44, who served as treasurer for the PTO, faces a charge of theft by swindle after reportedly transferring thousands of dollars from the PTO’s funds to her personal accounts. McMullin, a familiar face in the school’s parent community, allegedly used the money for personal expenses such as groceries, childcare, mortgage payments, and even takeout food.
A Betrayal of Trust
The accusations against McMullin paint a disturbing picture of someone who exploited her position for personal gain. Given access to the PTO’s bank account as part of her role, she was trusted to manage the organization’s finances. However, according to the complaint, it wasn’t long before McMullin began to make unauthorized withdrawals, starting just two months after she became treasurer in 2016.
The complaint alleges that her first illegal transaction was a $200 payment to a waste removal company. From there, the situation only grew worse. Over the next seven years, she continued to siphon funds from the PTO’s account to cover various personal expenses, including student loan payments.
McMullin even went as far as writing checks to herself and making ATM withdrawals from the PTO’s account, the complaint claims.
Discovery by the New Board
The alleged fraud went undetected for years until a new PTO board took over in mid-2023. Upon reviewing the organization’s finances, the new board members received a startling letter from the bank: the PTO account was overdrawn. Stunned, they confronted McMullin, who reportedly admitted that she had been “borrowing” funds to “keep afloat” financially at home.
Despite her apology and expressed desire to “make it right,” the board immediately reported the matter to local authorities.
Community Left in Shock
For the Elm Creek Elementary community, the news has been nothing short of devastating. Parents who once trusted McMullin with their children’s school funds are grappling with the betrayal. The PTO, an organization meant to support students and school programs, is now tainted by financial scandal, and the emotional toll on the community is palpable.
“She was someone we all knew,” one parent commented. “It’s hard to believe she could do something like this.”
An Investigation Unveiled
As police began investigating, they discovered that McMullin was the only person actively handling the PTO’s finances. The former PTO president reportedly told investigators that she trusted McMullin completely and had little involvement in the management of the group’s funds.
However, getting financial documents from McMullin had apparently been a challenge. According to the complaint, McMullin frequently made excuses about being too busy or having used an old account by mistake.
Years of Unauthorized Transactions
The investigation revealed a pattern of theft spanning from September 19, 2016, until July 30, 2023. Over that time, McMullin is accused of transferring around $188,419 from the PTO’s account to cover personal expenses. Despite making some “nominal deposits” back into the account, the damage was extensive.
Her actions left the PTO not only financially depleted but also struggling to regain the trust of the school’s families.
Next Steps in Court
McMullin’s first court appearance is scheduled for September 30. As the case moves forward, parents and community members are left wondering how such a massive theft could have gone unnoticed for so long.
The school’s PTO now faces the difficult task of rebuilding from this scandal, both financially and reputationally. For many in the community, the scars of this betrayal may take years to heal.
