A Historical Journey
The Empire Builder isn’t just any train; it’s a route with a rich history, conceived by local legend James J. Hill and his Great Northern Railway. Starting from St. Paul‘s historic Union Depot (214 4th St E, St Paul, MN 55101), you’ll follow tracks that have united our region for generations.
A Scenic Bargain

It’s a steal for a ticket to ride alongside the majestic Mississippi River. Keep in mind; the $26 deal might vary depending on when you go!
Nature’s Spectacle
As you bid farewell to St. Paul, the urban skyline gives way to picturesque vistas. The winding Mississippi River takes center stage, offering a breathtaking view that will leave you spellbound. It’s like the city has handed you a front-row seat to a nature show, and Mother Nature spares no expense in her production.
Scenic Delights Along the Way
The Empire Builder makes a quick stop in Red Wing, a town that exudes small-town charm and friendliness. Here, you can stroll through quaint streets, stumble upon bakeries with century-old pie recipes, and discover shops filled with unique treasures.
A Family-Friendly Haven
Red Wing is an ideal spot for families, with parks perfect for leisurely picnics and games. The pace is just right, allowing you to savor the sights without feeling rushed.
A River Dance
As the journey continues along the river’s edge, you’ll witness backwaters where wildlife plays hide and seek among the foliage. The bluffs maintain their silent vigil, and Lake Pepin’s wide embrace welcomes you.

Upon arriving in Winona, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The town welcomes you with open arms, boasting quaint streets and warm vibes. It’s a place where every street corner has a story, and the buildings are like friendly storytellers.

I believe that Winona is a small city … but it is not a small town. With just under 26,000 people in the city proper. As a native Winonan, I don’t really feel like we are like Mayberry. If you do want that “Mayberry experience” you can! Mount Airy, NC is the home of Andy Griffith – and it is the location of the mythical “Mayberry.”
Hello, Linda – Great points! As locals, we easy it is to walk everyone in a small town like Winona…but you may a great point about public transport. We’ll update this article to point that out. Thanks for the feedback. Have a super day! – Jack and Kitty
