LE SUEUR, MN – A picturesque city nestled along the Minnesota River, Le Sueur, Minnesota has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. The area was initially known as Prairie La Fleche, or “arrow prairie,” by French explorers, likely a translation of the native Dakota name for the area, Wahinoge, meaning “flint quarry.” The city’s current name, Le Sueur, was adopted in 1853 in honor of the French explorer Pierre-Charles Le Sueur, who explored the region between 1683 and 1722.
🌿 The Early Days of Le Sueur
The first claim on the land that would become Le Sueur was made by George W. Thompson in 1852. However, his claim was challenged by Henry McLean, who presented a license from the governor to operate with the area’s native population. Despite Thompson’s initial vacation of the land, he managed to claim lands one mile upriver and, with a party led by J.M. Farmer, founded the village of Le Sueur.
Meanwhile, McLean, unaware of the newly established village upriver, attempted to found his own village named Le Sueur. Due to the identical name of Thompson’s settlement, McLean was forced to name his community Le Sueur City. The rivalry between the two communities led to separate civil legislation and hindered the incorporation of either settlement. In 1867, the Minnesota Legislature resolved the issue by uniting both communities into a single borough town named Le Sueur.

One of Le Sueur’s most notable early residents was Dr. William Worrall Mayo, who began his medical practice in the city before going on to found the world-famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, with his sons William and Charles.
Dr. Mayo’s former home in Le Sueur, the Dr. William W. Mayo House, has been meticulously restored to its mid-1800s appearance and now serves as a museum. In 1903, 14 local merchants in Le Sueur established the Minnesota Valley Canning Company. The company’s fortunes changed in 1925 with the introduction of a new product, “Green Giant Great Big Tender Peas,” along with a mascot inspired by the legendary Paul Bunyan, called the “Jolly Green Giant.” The mascot’s popularity led the company to change its name to the Green Giant Co. in 1950.
The Green Giant Company thrived in Le Sueur, providing jobs and economic stability for the community. In 1979, Pillsbury acquired the company and moved its headquarters to Minneapolis. However, the Green Giant research center remained in Le Sueur until 1995, when Pillsbury officially announced its closure. Despite this, the city’s connection to the Green Giant legacy remains strong.

In 1999, Advertising Age, the marketing industry’s premier publication, recognized the Jolly Green Giant as one of the most influential advertising icons of the 20th century. The magazine placed the Green Giant third on its list of top ten advertising icons, surpassed only by the Marlboro Man and Ronald McDonald.
This prestigious ranking put the Green Giant ahead of other beloved characters such as Betty Crocker, the Energizer Bunny, the Pillsbury Doughboy, Aunt Jemima, the Michelin Man, Tony the Tiger, and Elsie, the Borden cow. The recognition by Advertising Age underscores the enduring power and popularity of the Jolly Green Giant, cementing his status as a true American advertising legend.
