CARDIFF, ID – The sound of an explosion shattered the afternoon in Cardiff, Idaho, as a gas station erupted in flames on Wednesday. Thick smoke billowed from the Atkinson Distributing station, and first responders rushed to the scene to find devastation.
Two people were severely burned and airlifted to a hospital, while others remain unaccounted for, according to authorities. Firefighters are still battling the blaze.
Investigation Ongoing as Victims Remain Unaccounted For
The explosion occurred shortly after 3 p.m., when a fuel tanker was offloading gasoline at the station. Jeff Adams, manager of Atkinson Distributing, confirmed that the two individuals flown to a Seattle burn center were employees. Their condition remains critical.
âWe believe there are more victims still inside the structure,â the Clearwater County Sheriffâs Office said. âThe fire is still burning, and we do not know when it will be fully extinguished.â
The site also housed a convenience store, where Adams suspects some customers were trapped during the blast. Communication from the scene has been slow due to the area’s poor cell phone service, making it difficult to assess the full scope of the disaster.
Cause of Explosion Under Investigation
The Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office, in conjunction with the Clearwater County Sheriffâs Office, is investigating the cause of the explosion. Fire Marshal Knute Sandahl confirmed two other people were hospitalized, but their conditions remain unclear.
As the investigation unfolds, officials are working to determine the number of people still missing. The incident has left the small Idaho community grappling with the aftermath of the tragic event.
