OAKLAND COUNTY, MI – A powerful explosion tore through a condominium building in Orion Township, Michigan, Tuesday evening, seriously injuring two residents and displacing around 20 people. Officials say the blast, likely caused by a gas leak, sent shockwaves through the Keatington New Town complex, about 40 miles north of Detroit.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the explosion occurred at approximately 6:20 p.m. on Waldon Road, between Baldwin and Joslyn roads. Residents in the area reported hearing a loud boom and seeing debris scattered across the complex.

Two Critically Injured, Residents Accounted For

Orion Township Fire Chief Ryan Allen revealed during a press conference that two people, a man and a woman in their 70s, sustained critical burn injuries and were taken to the hospital. “A couple of other residents had minor injuries,” Allen added. Authorities initially reported two individuals unaccounted for, but they were later confirmed to have been away from home when the explosion occurred.

The blast completely destroyed a four-unit building and caused extensive damage to neighboring condominiums. Township Supervisor Chris Barnett described the destruction, saying, “It looks like something in a movie.” Despite the chaos, Barnett expressed gratitude that more people weren’t seriously hurt.

Investigation and Cleanup Underway

Fire officials believe a gas leak may have triggered the explosion but stressed that the investigation could take up to a week to complete. “Cleanup will take longer,” Allen noted, as crews continue to assess the scene and work toward making the area safe.

Consumers Energy, the local utility provider, stated that their personnel are ready to assist investigators as soon as the site is deemed safe. In the meantime, officials are working to support the displaced residents and ensure their immediate needs are met.
