ROWLEY, MA – Imagine a peaceful walk in the woods, the only sound being leaves crunching beneath your feet, when suddenly, a metal detector’s beep interrupts the calm. What started as a quiet hobby turned into a tense situation in the Massachusetts forest, where a local man discovered something unexpected beneath the soil—explosives.
While enjoying a casual metal-detecting outing on Thursday afternoon, the man stumbled upon a buried cache of TNT and plastic explosives. The find, made in the state-owned forest off Route 1 near Newbury, prompted a swift response from local law enforcement.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., the man contacted the Rowley Police Department, reporting his unusual discovery. Officers arrived promptly, accompanied by the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the FBI.
A Hidden Cache Beneath the Ground
The metal container, buried deep in the forest, held explosives that authorities believe had been there for “an undetermined number of years.” Investigators, while unsure of who buried them or why, quickly worked to ensure the public’s safety.
The bomb squad carried out a series of controlled explosions to safely dispose of the hazardous materials. As a precaution, the Rowley Fire Department and Action Ambulance were on standby. Fortunately, the explosives were found in a remote section of the forest, so no evacuations were required.
Age-Old Danger Remains a Mystery
“Due to the apparent age of the explosives and the amount of time they had been buried, no further investigative efforts are expected,” Rowley Police said. The discovery raised more questions than answers, but authorities concluded that the danger had been neutralized without posing a threat to the surrounding area.
Though the origins of the explosives remain a mystery, this discovery serves as a reminder that the quiet woods of Massachusetts may hold more secrets than one might expect.
