ST. PAUL, MN – Sick of Minnesota? If you’re looking for a fresh start in a new location, a rural region in Spain is offering digital nomads a unique opportunity: a chance to relocate with up to $16,600 (specifically, €15,000) in financial support.

The government of Extremadura, Spain, has launched the “Live in Ambroz” initiative to boost its declining population by attracting remote workers and tech professionals to settle in the picturesque Ambroz Valley.

The Incentive Program

The Spanish government has allocated $2.2 million (€2 million) for grants to encourage up to 200 remote workers to move to this scenic region. The grants can be used for housing, land, and other essentials needed to make the move.

The goal is simple: revive the shrinking population of the Ambroz Valley by attracting digital nomads who can bring economic activity to the region.

Who Can Apply

The “Live in Ambroz” program is primarily targeting tech professionals who can work 100% remotely. To qualify, applicants must either be legal residents of Spain or part of the country’s digital nomad visa program. However, if you’ve lived in Extremadura in the last six months, you won’t be eligible.

There are additional bonuses as well: women, people under 30, and those willing to move to a town in Extremadura with fewer than 5,000 residents can receive up to $11,000 (€10,000). All other applicants will be eligible for $8,900 (€8,000).

For those who decide to stay beyond the two-year requirement, an additional bonus awaits. If digital nomads choose to remain in the region for a third year, they will receive another $4,400 to $5,500 (€4,000 to €5,000) to encourage long-term residency.

Why Extremadura?

Located in western Spain, bordering Portugal, Extremadura offers more than just financial perks. Known for its affordability, a one-bedroom apartment in Badajoz, one of its cities, can cost around $531 a month.

The region is home to some of the country’s most stunning landscapes—freshwater beaches, rolling forests, and sprawling nature reserves. History enthusiasts will find plenty to explore with Roman ruins, Moorish architecture, and ancient vineyards.

With a population of roughly one million spread over 16,000 square miles, Extremadura is the perfect destination for those looking for a quieter, more peaceful lifestyle. It offers the charm of rural life while maintaining proximity to major urban centers in Spain and Portugal.

Long-Term Vision

The government of Extremadura has ambitious plans. If the “Live in Ambroz” initiative proves successful, similar programs could be rolled out across the region, helping other rural areas struggling with depopulation.

With a combination of financial support and the promise of a simpler, slower pace of life, the region hopes to attract a new wave of professionals eager to contribute to its future.

Experts believe digital nomads have the potential to add real value to rural areas. By fostering connections between locals and remote workers, communities could see a boost in entrepreneurship, community involvement, and economic activity.
