ST. PAUL, MN – My hubby Jack and I love road tripping in the fall and we always use this time as a good reminder to get our truck road ready for the upcoming Minnesota winter. Fall is the perfect season to tackle maintenance tasks that can keep your car running smoothly through the colder months.
Seasonal shifts can affect how your vehicle operates, so getting ahead of potential issues is key. Hereās your essential checklist to ensure your ride is prepared for whatever winter throws your way.
1. Tire Tread
Before the snow arrives, make sure your tires are equipped to handle winter conditions. Checking your tire tread is crucial for maintaining traction on icy roads.
Use a simple penny test: insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the entire head, itās time to replace your tires. If the tread covers part of his head, youāre generally good to go. If new tires are necessary, it’s best to consult a professional for installation.

2. Battery Check
Winter can be tough on car batteries, which typically last between three to five years. Check the date on your battery; if it’s nearing the end of its lifespan, have it tested by a mechanic. A failing battery can leave you stranded in the cold.
If you need a new battery, you might be able to install it yourself if you’re handy, but hiring a professional can cost between $175 and $400 depending on the battery type.
3. Wiper Blades
Temperature changes can take a toll on your windshield wipers, causing cracks and splits in the rubber.
Inspect your wiper blades for any signs of wear, such as separation from the arm or damage to the rubber. If you notice any issues, itās time to replace them. A clear windshield is vital for safe driving, especially during rainy or snowy conditions.

4. Washer Fluid
Itās easy to overlook your windshield washer fluid, but itās essential for visibility in winter weather. Ensure your reservoir is full, and consider using washer fluid that contains de-icer to help clear snow and ice from your windshield while driving.
To fill the reservoir, locate the cap under the hood marked with a windshield symbol, and use a funnel if necessary to avoid spills.

5. Coolant Level
Proper coolant levels are essential as temperatures drop. Ensure that you have a mixture that can withstand the colder weather, ideally a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water.
To check your coolant, locate the screw-on cap on the coolant reservoir, which may have a thermometer symbol or a warning not to open it when hot. If you’re unsure about mixing your coolant, consider consulting your vehicle’s manual or a mechanic.
6. Air Filters
The cabin air filter plays a critical role in maintaining a clean air supply inside your vehicle, especially after a summer filled with pollen and dust. Fall is a great time to replace this filter, typically located behind the glove box.
Depending on your carās make and model, you might need to remove the glove box for access. Check your vehicle’s manual for specific instructions on the replacement process.
Keep Your Ride Safe and Sound!
Taking the time to complete this fall car maintenance checklist can save you from costly repairs and ensure your vehicle performs reliably throughout the winter. Don’t wait until the first snowfall to address these important tasks; act now to keep your ride safe and sound. Your car will thank you when winter arrives!
