PINE COUNTY, MN – A Minnesota family dinner turned deadly when a 31-year-old man allegedly carried out an “execution-style” killing of his father at a hunting cabin in Pine County. Authorities say the accused, Kirk Edward Hazlett III, also held two witnesses captive during the incident, later allowing them to flee after confiscating their phones.
Suspect Faces Multiple Charges for Cabin Tragedy
On Monday, Pine County prosecutors charged Hazlett III, of Cambridge, with two counts of second-degree murder, one count of first-degree burglary, and two counts of second-degree kidnapping. The charges stem from a Friday night shooting at the family’s hunting cabin on the 57000 block of Barns Spring Road in Hinckley.
According to the criminal complaint, Hazlett III’s uncle contacted authorities around 8:45 p.m., reporting that Hazlett III had fatally shot his father. When deputies arrived, the uncle and another witness, described as “frantic,” directed them to the cabin, where they discovered the victim lying in a pool of blood. Investigators say the victim had been shot nine times.
Witnesses Recount Terrifying Details
The complaint details a disturbing scene inside the cabin. Hazlett III’s uncle and the second witness told investigators they were finishing dinner with the victim when a trail camera alert showed someone walking up the driveway with a pistol. Hazlett III allegedly entered through the side door and began firing before the uncle could retrieve his own handgun.
The uncle told police that Hazlett III’s father was still breathing after being shot multiple times. The witnesses said Hazlett III then demanded they sit on the couch while they pleaded for their lives. According to the complaint, Hazlett III “walked over to his father and shot him again in the back of the head to make sure he was dead.”
After taking the men’s cell phones, Hazlett III reportedly allowed them to leave. The witnesses ran to a neighboring cabin and called for help.
One of the witnesses later described the incident to investigators, saying Hazlett III “busted through” the door without speaking and began shooting. “He entered with a mission…he entered to kill him,” the witness stated, describing the final shot as “execution style.”
Tensions and Arrest Follow Grisly Scene
The complaint notes that Hazlett III had strained relationships with his family but appeared “very coherent” during the incident. A half-hour after the shooting, Hazlett III contacted Isanti County authorities to report his girlfriend’s alleged suicidal comments. Authorities arrested him at his home in Cambridge without further resistance.
Hazlett III’s girlfriend told investigators he had borrowed her car to visit the cabin that night. She confirmed that Hazlett III and his family “don’t see eye to eye,” but provided no further information about a possible motive.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and Hazlett III remains in custody facing multiple charges. This tragic event has left a family reeling and raised questions about the events that led to such a violent outcome.
