LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA – A California man found himself hanging on for his life after his car plunged over a cliff early Thursday morning, triggering a brush fire that spread rapidly across the hillsides of Calabasas. What started as a dangerous accident quickly became a dramatic rescue operation involving both fire crews and search teams, all under the cover of darkness.
Brush Fire Ignites After Car Plunges Off Cliff
The Los Angeles County Fire Department was the first to respond at around 1:11 a.m. Thursday when reports came in about a brush fire near Stunt Road and Mulholland Highway in Calabasas.
Firefighters arrived to find a quarter-acre blaze advancing uphill, with the fire fueled by dry vegetation in the area. The fire was quickly contained after spreading across one acre, thanks to aerial support and the efforts of ground crews.
Rescue Teams Track Down Injured Driver
While firefighters battled the fire, the Malibu Search and Rescue team was alerted to a potential victim. Approximately one hour after the fire was reported, a California Highway Patrol officer heard a voice yelling for help. Acting on this, the search team ventured to the opposite side of the mountain, eventually locating the injured man.
A video shared by Malibu Sheriff’s Search and Rescue captured the victim, who appeared to be walking under his own power, though wobbly and bleeding from his head. He was transported to the hospital for treatment of “unknown injuries.”
Street Racing Suspected in Cause of Accident
The cause of the crash has raised eyebrows. According to Malibu Sheriff Search and Rescue, the man’s vehicle was allegedly forced off the road by two cars involved in street racing. This disturbing twist has sparked further concern about the dangers of reckless driving in the area.
In the wake of the incident, officials are continuing to investigate the details, including the possible involvement of street racing, which could have contributed to the dramatic and dangerous accident.
