Exploring the Heartland
Greetings, fellow travelers! This is Jack from “Travel with Jack and Kitty,” back with another travel insight. Last week, we journeyed through our favorite countries around the globe. This week, we’re bringing it back home—more specifically, to Minnesota, the beautiful and often underrated state Kitty and I are proud to call home.
For those of you who may not know, we’ve been fortunate to live in a town called Winona, tucked away on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. We wake up every day to the breathtaking beauty of the river, visible right from our window. It’s a vision that never fails to remind us why we chose to make Minnesota our home.
There’s an allure to this part of the country that’s hard to put into words. Minnesota combines the serene tranquility of nature with the modern comforts of city living. Winona, for instance, strikes the perfect balance between urban and rural—it’s peaceful, with significantly less crime, traffic-free roads, and a more relaxed way of life. Yet, it’s big enough to have almost everything Minneapolis offers, meaning we hardly ever feel like we’re missing out.
My Favorite Cities in Minnesota
Now, if I had to name my favorite cities in Minnesota, without a doubt, Winona tops the list. Apart from its inherent charm, it boasts a vibrant arts scene and has a delightful college town vibe that keeps things lively and engaging. The relaxed atmosphere in Winona is a sharp contrast to the touristy hustle and bustle of cities like Duluth—although Duluth, too, is stunningly beautiful in its own right.
My next favorite has to be the dynamic duo—Minneapolis and Saint Paul, commonly known as the Twin Cities, separated by the flowing Mississippi River. If you’ve ever wondered about the difference between the two, let me paint you a picture: Saint Paul’s downtown area is a vision from a bygone era, filled with elegance and charm. Minneapolis, on the other hand, presents a grittier, more action-packed cityscape.
Having grown up in Minneapolis, I share a deep-rooted connection with the city. The familiarity, the vibrant energy—it feels like home. If I had to choose between the two, Minneapolis would win, although Saint Paul, with its unique appeal, wouldn’t be far behind.
Let’s not forget about New Ulm, a delightful little German town that’s incredibly fun to explore. There’s also the northeastern part of the state, which includes charming towns like Grand Marais and Lutsen. If you love nature, these places are a must-visit, set against the backdrop of the magnificent Lake Superior.
Ultimately, if you ask me to pick a favorite part of Minnesota, I’d point you towards the southeast corner of the state—east and south of Rochester, right up to the borders with Iowa and Wisconsin. This region, with its warm and welcoming nature, holds a special place in my heart. I often joke that we’re the “Miami of Minnesota,” nestled in the deep south of the state!
In conclusion, whether it’s Minneapolis, Winona, New Ulm, or Grand Marais, there’s something to love about every corner of Minnesota. Each city and town brings a unique flavor, making Minnesota a state of diverse landscapes, cultures, and experiences. And I’m not just talking about the tater tot hotdish! Hehe. So if you’re ever in the neighborhood, don’t hesitate to explore these wonderful places.
