BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Federal authorities have arrested a Florida man accused of planning a bomb attack on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in an effort to “reset” the U.S. government. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida announced the charges on Wednesday.
Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, 30, of Coral Springs, Florida, faces charges of attempting to use an explosive device to damage or destroy a building involved in interstate commerce.
FBI Investigation Uncovers Bombmaking Plans
Court documents reveal the FBI began investigating Yener in February after receiving a tip about suspicious materials in an unlocked storage unit. When agents searched the unit, they discovered “bombmaking sketches, numerous watches with timers, electronic circuit boards, and other electronics that could be used for constructing explosive devices.”
Further investigation into Yener’s online activity showed that he had allegedly been researching bombmaking techniques as far back as 2017, using his Google account.
By June, Yener reportedly discussed his intentions with a confidential FBI source, expressing interest in joining an anti-government militia. He later met with an undercover FBI employee whom he believed was part of the militia and detailed plans to target the NYSE during the week leading up to Thanksgiving.
Alleged Plan and Motive
Prosecutors say Yener aimed to bomb the NYSE to “reboot” or “reset” the government. Over the last month, he allegedly built remote triggers for explosives using two-way radios and researched potential bomb placement locations at the NYSE.
The FBI alleges that Yener enlisted undercover agents to acquire the explosive materials needed for the device. He also tasked them with conducting surveillance on the NYSE and taking photos to identify where the bomb should be planted.
In a recorded message, Yener explained his reasons for the attack, predicting the explosion would cause catastrophic destruction. According to the court filing, Yener allegedly claimed the explosion would be “like a small nuke went off” and that “[a]nything outside” the building “will be wiped out” while “anything inside there would be killed.”
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Yener was arrested on Wednesday and appeared in court the same day. He is being held in custody and will remain detained as he awaits trial.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by federal law enforcement to intercept and dismantle potential threats to national security. Investigators continue to analyze evidence gathered during the operation.
